Bessie Nakamarra Sims An established indigenous artist. Skin Name: Nakamarra Country: Yuendumu, Northern Territor Born: 07/01/1932 " I like painting cause it's my Dreaming - Bush Carrot, Yam Dreaming…From my father and grandfather's side. I like to teach kids my Dreamining. I want everyone to know my Dreaming from all over the world. I know and they can know…" Bessie Sims is the wife of Paddy Japaljarri Sims, they have 7 children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bessie was born in the bush and lived for many years before coming into contact with white people at Mt. Doreen Station, west of Yuendumu. She now lives in South Camp in Yuendumu and is an active member of Yuendumu Night patrol which helps keep Yuendumu a safe community. In her spare time she goes hunting for wardapi (goanna) and bush tucker such as yarla (bush potato) and yakajirri (bush tomato). Skin Name: Nungarrayi Country: Yuendumu, Northern Territor Born: 30/05/1955 Alma Nungarrayi Granites lives in Yuendumu, an Aboriginal community located Northwest of Alice Springs. She is the daughter of Paddy Japaljarri Sims and Bessie Nakamarra Sims both founding artists of Warlukurlangu Artists. She paints a large array of stories all of which have been passed down to her from her father and generations before him. All her paintings tell creation stories that relate to the artists traditional country. Alma is married and has 4 children. She has many, many grandchildren and spends a lot of time helping to take care of them. Alma attended the local school and then continued her studies at Kormilda College in Darwin. She then finished a Teachers assistant diploma through Batchelor College and worked teaching at Yuendumu school for many years. She has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists since 1987. Skin Name: Napangardi Country: Yuendumu, Northern Territor Born:24/08/1972 Sabrina is the grand-daughter of Paddy Japaljarri Sims and Bessie Nakamarra Sims, two of the founding artists of Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Association, the art centre located in Yuendumu. This is one of the oldest, continually operating art centre in the Central Desert of Australia. Sabrina has been painting with the art centre since 1997. She paints the Dreaming stories passed to her from her grandfather and grandmother. Sabrina attended the local school at Yuendumu. Sabrina is married and has two young daughters whom she is raising. She currently works with the art centre. Occassionaly she goes hunting with her family around Yuendumu collecting bush foods.
